Mary S. McDowell
Mary S. McDowell (1876-1955) was a Quaker school teacher at Manual Training High School dismissed by the New York City Board of Education on charges of disloyalty, because she refused to sign a loyalty pledge in 1917 (during World War I) due to her religious convictions.〔''Board of Education of the City of New York: In the Matter of the Charges of Conduct Unbecoming a Teacher Preferred Against Mary S.
